Teeth Whitening
Brighter teeth without the gimmicks: done safely, with your enamel protected and your expectations set honestly.
When whitening works, and when something else will serve you better
Whitening is usually right when…
- Your teeth have gradually yellowed with age, coffee, tea or smoking
- Your teeth and gums are healthy, with no untreated decay
- You want a brighter version of your own natural teeth
…but whitening can't fix everything
Whitening gel doesn't change the colour of fillings or crowns, and it can't lighten greyish discolouration from inside a tooth (for example after a root canal). For a single dark tooth or heavily patched front teeth, a veneer or crown gives a far better result.

What is professional teeth whitening?
Professional whitening uses a peroxide-based gel, applied under a dentist’s supervision, to break down the pigmented molecules that build up inside enamel over years of coffee, tea, wine and time. Unlike abrasive “whitening” toothpastes that scrub at the surface, the gel works on the colour inside the tooth itself.
The word professional matters here. The gel concentrations used in-clinic are regulated, your gums are physically shielded during treatment, and, most importantly, your teeth are examined first. Whitening a tooth with hidden decay or exposed roots is genuinely harmful, and that examination is the step unsupervised kits cannot provide.
An honest word about results
Whitening brightens the natural shade of your teeth; it does not turn them paper-white, and results differ from person to person. Yellowish staining responds best; greyish tones respond less. At Happy Tooth Dental Clinic in Puchong, your dentist will show you a realistic target shade before you commit, because a delighted patient with honest expectations is the only kind of result we are interested in.
Nothing unknown, nothing to fear
Check and clean
We make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and free of plaque; whitening over problems helps no one.
Gums protected
A protective barrier is placed along your gum line so the gel only touches teeth. You just lie back; this part is fiddly for us, effortless for you.
Gel and light
Whitening gel goes on and an LED light activates it. You relax for 15-minute cycles; most people scroll their phone or doze.
The reveal
Gel comes off, shade is compared with where you started. You see the difference immediately, side by side.
Will it hurt? Whitening doesn't hurt during the treatment. Some people feel brief, random 'zings' of sensitivity in the hours afterwards. They pass within a day, and a sensitivity toothpaste beforehand reduces them. If your teeth are prone to sensitivity, tell us and we'll adjust the gel strength.
- DoStick to light-coloured food and drinks (the "white shirt rule": if it would stain one, it stains teeth)
- DoUse sensitivity toothpaste if you feel zings
- Don'tCoffee, tea, red wine, curry, soy sauce (just for these two days)
- Don'tSmoke; it re-stains fastest of all
- DoReturn to normal eating gradually
- DoBrush twice daily as always
- Don'tWorry if the shade settles slightly; a small rebound in the first days is normal
Call us if: sensitivity lasts beyond two days or any spot on your gums feels irritated. Both are easy to settle, and we want to know.
There is nothing to heal, because whitening is non-invasive. Results typically last one to two years depending on your coffee, tea and smoking habits. A top-up session refreshes the shade without starting from zero.
What determines the fee
- In-clinic vs. take-home — a supervised in-clinic session gives the fastest result; take-home trays work gradually over weeks
- Starting shade and cause — surface stains lift easily; deeper age-related yellowing takes more cycles
- Cleaning first if needed — whitening over tartar wastes the gel, so sometimes a scaling comes first
No surprises — that's the rule
You will get the exact fee after examination, before any treatment starts.
“My rule with whitening is simple: I'd rather under-promise a shade and have you delighted, than oversell and have you disappointed. The goal is your own teeth, in their natural colour range, brightened honestly.”

Frequently asked questions
Is whitening safe for my enamel?
Yes. Dentist-supervised whitening uses regulated concentrations and protects your gums, and decades of studies show it does not damage enamel. The horror stories come from unregulated products used without an examination.
How white will my teeth get?
It varies by person: typically several shades brighter, within the natural range of your own teeth. Your dentist will show you a realistic target on a shade guide before you decide.
Why not just buy a whitening kit online?
Unregulated gels can burn gums and cause severe sensitivity, and they skip the underlying checks entirely. Whitening over decay or thin enamel causes real harm, and supervision is what prevents it.
Will it work on my fillings or crowns?
No, restorations keep their original colour. If you whiten around them, we plan it together so front fillings can be matched to your new shade afterwards.
